Countdown to QuiltCon and Tackling a UFO

Does every quilter have a UFO sitting up in a closet? While I don’t have that many, there is one that’s been calling “Finish me!”

My big one is a Medallion Quilt made up of curved Drunkard’s Path blocks from Angela Pingel’s book A Quilter’s Mixology. (AFFILIATE LINK)

Over a year ago, I pieced the top during a sew-along but never finished it. Deep down, I was intimidated and scared to quilt it – all due to the curved piecing.

Right now, I’m considering two different quilting tops – echoing around the medallion shapes or straight line quilting horizontal lines about 1/2 inch apart. I do think both styles would work with the piecing and emphasize it.

Fabrics used are Amy Butler’s Midwest Modern line, a cream solid, and Anna Maria Horner Baby Bouquet voile for the backing. I’ve been saving the Anna Maria Horner voile for about THREE YEARS. It was purchased at one of my local quilt shops on my first ever fabric shopping trip – marked down to 50 percent off in the sale section in the basement.

At the time I didn’t know the different between substrates, but loved the delicate floral print of Baby Bouquet. When searching for a backing for the Medallion Quilt, I noticed the print had many of the same colors as Midwest Modern. Perfect! Not to mention, no piecing since the Free Spirit voile line is 52-54 inches wide.

I’d gladly welcome your input on this!quiltcon-west-2016

In other news, QuiltCon is only one month away!

QuiltCon West is in Pasadena, CA – the first year the convention has been moved out of Austin, TX. QuiltCon East 2017 will be in Savannah, GA.

Because I’m a first-timer, I wanted to leave myself plenty of time to explore the exhibit hall, sit in on lectures, and do some blogging/vlogging. I will be flying in Wednesday afternoon, and registered for two shorter workshops Thursday and Friday evenings: More Dot to Dot Quilting with Angela Walters and a Strip Piecing Crash Course with Amy Smart.

Personally, I’ve been a huge fan girl of both instructors for years and can’t believe I’ll be taking their classes!

Because some of the supply lists for my workshops included a rotary cutter, pins, scissors, etc. – I thought it would be a good idea to check out TSA rules for traveling with sharp objects. It appears I’ll be able to check all of my sewing notions, according to this list.

Are you going to QuiltCon?

I’m hoping to meet and connect with new people – including you if you’re going! I’ll be Instagramming frequently @MooreApproved and posting to our Facebook page.

If you’ve attended QuiltCon before or have traveled to Pasadena, feel free to share tips and travel must-sees!

See you next time!

-Jennifer
